Day Tour in Phuket

Phuket, Thailand

Today, we hired a guide to take us around Phuket.  First off, we went to a temple.  We had to take off our shoes before going in as a sign of respect.  When we got in, there was an alter of sorts and people were kneeling down before it.  We just took a look then headed out to another temple where the same thing was required.  This time however, the stairs (which were outside) were really hot from the sun and actually hurt my feet a little!

Next, we went to see the Big Buddha.  Before entering the premises, we were required to wrap this piece of cloth around our waists/legs.  But the stand where you pick them up was off to the side so I didn’t realize that you were supposed to do that.  Well, that was a big mistake!  The Thai people take their worship practices and respect very seriously!  So I got scolded.  Twice.  First, an older Thai woman gave me very mean and disapproving looks.  Then she pointed to the cloth stand and said something in her own language.  When I didn’t understand, she gave me one last rude look and then with a “bah!” she kept going, holding onto her husband’s arm.  Seconds later, another woman – one from the stand – came running after me, and said something like, “You have to wear one.”  So I had to follow her back and get one of them wrapped around me.

Now, in 80 degree weather, you do not want to be wearing extra layers…especially when they are itchy pieces of cloth that have to be wrapped around several times and run the risk of slipping off.  However, it is necessary to wear them if you want to proceed and you don’t want dirty looks.  I was kind of in a bad mood after that grumpy old Thai lady made it her personal business to tell me off, but then my dad bought us coconut ice cream and that pretty much solved the problem 🙂

After that, we visited a few beaches then headed back to the hotel.
